Casablanca… KISS on one hand and all the 70’s disco artists on the other., including Donna Summer.

6 FAVORITE THINGS

Image result for 6

I’m going to make this a regular thing on the blog….

My 6 Favorite Things right now.

Here’s the first edition of this….

1-Netflix’s F Is For Family

F Is For Family is a very funny animated series from comedian Bill Burr.

This is not for everyone because it can be crude, but you might dig it.

2-Big Star’s Best Of

It’s due officially in a couple of weeks, but I have an early copy and I’ve always loved the very underrated Big Star. A band led by the late Alex Chilton (The Box Tops) that should have/could have been something on a major level, but it just wasn’t to be. Big Star has continued to build this underground following over the years and they’re a favorite among many artists. Big Star has great songs, period.

3-Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot

Wonder Woman is probably one of the better superhero flicks to come along in quite some time. Well done.

4-Fark.com

It’s one of my favorite websites. Fark.com features actual stories of the weird, strange, odd, bizarre and the sometimes apparent insane people and situations.

5-Little Records Podcast

I’m a fan of many genres and styles, but one of my favorites is classic alternative and even punk. I like the Little Records Podcast a lot.

Little Records recently celebrated an anniversary too!

6-U2’s The Joshua Tree deluxe anniversary edition

I’ve liked U2 since the early days…Boy, October, War, The Unforgettable Fire. I really like Wide Awake In America and all the rest. The Joshua Tree was probably their most successful album and really broke them through in a very mainstream, mass appeal way…With Or Without You, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For and Where The Streets Have No Name. My personal favorite track has always been Bullet The Blue Sky….maybe it’s because I’m a drummer and I like the beats. There’s some extra nuggets on this reissue. U2 has a lot of love (and hate) from people, but I like their material.

THE PUNISHER

Netflix is expected to debut Marvel’s The Punisher in November.

THE BUZZ OF THE BEATLES

Image result for tv emoji

Here’s a Fall TV Sneak Peek!

Among the tv tidbits: ABC will have a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff about firefighters, CBS with a Big Bang Theory prequel called Young Sheldon, NBC is bringing back Will & Grace.

RADIO STORIES

Image result for radio emoji

I’ve got a podcast that is going to launch in the near future and there’s going to be several elements to it. One of those is Radio Stories from myself and others, including the airstaff here at our three stations. It’ll give you a peek into their lives and their history over the years until now. I think you’ll find it interesting. The Zack Skyler Podcast will have interviews, a few celebs once in a while, conversations with Fort Wayne folks, Talkin’ TV, Music and Movies and whatever else may pop up. This will be something different from my time on the radio.

ONE HIT WONDERS

FUN 101.7 will have a One Hit Wonders Weekend this weekend!  🙂

I’ve posted a few of my favorite One Hit Wonders.

THE BEATLES SGT. PEPPER’S

The Beatles are by far, one of my favorite bands ever. I love all of their albums, in particular Revolver, Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of this iconic album. One of my favorite songs ever resides on it, A Day In The Life.

HIT MEN

Image result for hitmen dannen

Fredric Dannen’s Hit Men is one of my favorite books. I’ve read it a few times and just re-read it over the weekend. It tackles the world of record labels and radio and that nasty word payola. The record business is lead by a couple of groups of people: record men (guys who’ve got great ears) and interesting characters (guys that can be wild, crazy and on the edge). Both of these groups are usually people with ivy league law backgrounds and/or some great music background. In this world, there have appeared to be times where sometimes anything would be done to get a song played on radio stations. It’s a ride that you might enjoy.

GREATEST TV SERIES OF ALL TIME

These are my picks for the Greatest Television Series of All Time.

My #1 is always and forever, THE SOPRANOS

The Sopranos… Great writing and great writing. Superb storytelling and although a glimpse into the underworld. I like quality dramas that have a dark, sometimes seedy side to them.

Many of the characters, especially Tony Soprano, have a very relatable and likable quality to them in many ways. We all have issues in life.

I like comedies too, but my main tv shows are dramas.

Other tv shows I think are the greatest ever, include:

SONS OF ANARCHY

BREAKING BAD

MAD MEN

24 (Especially the orignal run)

MUSIC AND MOVIES THAT MADE THEIR IMPACT WITH ME

I’m a music and movie maniac! I like many genres of both music and movies.

Here’s a few of my favorites….

THE BEATLES

THE KINKS

THE DOORS

THE ROLLING STONES

CHUCK BERRY

LED ZEPPELIN

BADFINGER

BIG STAR

RAMONES

THE REPLACEMENTS

FLEETWOOD MAC

THE CROW

THE GODFATHER

GOODFELLAS

SCARFACE

I love many others too, but these are a few of my all-time favorites.

LIFE

Life is an adventure for all of us. There’s good and bad. Up’s and down’s. I’ve been through marriages, divorce, various radio jobs around Fort Wayne and other places like Orlando and Minneapolis, relationships that come and go from friends, lovers, coworkers…all of ’em. Life is always a lesson and I’m always learning. My story began in Muncie, Indiana, where I born in August of 1971 and adopted very soon after. I do know that being adopted does different things for different people. I look at it in a positive light. My biological folks did it because they loved me and wanted me to have a better life. My adoptive parents rocked/rock in every way… Dad passed a few years ago and Mom is still here laughing at my dumb humor. I will say this that being adopted helped to develop me as a person more than most people realize. My relationships have been hard, I’ll be honest. I think a lot of it stems from not letting people too close to me. People can’t leave you if they aren’t by your side anyway. Sometimes people don’t understand and speculate as to why. It’s never been an ego trip or anything like that. I’ve been told by some people that they had either seen, heard or read things about me that made me appear to be like a jerk or something. People make many assumptions based upon things that aren’t accurate. We THINK we know things, but sometimes things aren’t always what they seem to be. We all go through that at times in life. I grew up a very shy, quiet, nerdy kid with OCD (but not at a Monk level) that loved a few things…playing the drums, radio and music in general, some sports and girls, girls, girls. I can open up and turn it on anytime and most people would never realize. I just try to have fun and be nice to people. Radio and music became an escape for me. It never left me…ever. My kids are my world… Emily and Andrew and they are great kids and are a daily inspiration to me. So, here I am… a passionate, full of fire Leo, 45 and in the dating life and working a lot and loving life for the most part and taking life lessons every step of the way.

Here’s a few things that help guide me and I thought I’d share them with you.

Family is #1.

Be real.

Have fun.

Honesty always.

Treat people well.

Trust.

Work hard.

Play hard.

Laugh often.

Never give up.

Karma gets those that need a visit eventually.

We all win some and lose some.

Keep the important things important.

Treat yourself better.

A Few Of My Firsts

I’ll give you my age, which will put some of these in perspective better. I’m 45! 🙂

First Music: The first music I remember hearing was Wings and then I went back and listened to all of The Beatles material. I grew to love a lot of music that was before my time. I have an appreciation for it all and many genres. I’ll go in depth on my thoughts on it all in a post some time. I went back and listened to The Doors, The Rolling Stones and so much more. I was in elementary school when I began buying music. The first music I bought…Single: Joan Jett/I Love Rock & Roll. Albums: Survivor’s Eye Of The Tiger, Human League’s Dare, Quiet Riot’s Metal Health and Def Leppard’s Pyromania. By the time I got to high school…hard rock, metal, hair bands were the thing in the late 80’s and although I liked much of it, I also liked The Pixies and Sonic Youth. The Replacements are still one of my favorite bands ever!

First Movies: Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw in theatres. What a first one to see! The first movies I ever bought…all of the Star Wars flicks, The Godfather trilogy and The Dark Crystal.

First Concert: The first official concert I ever went to was with my parents with I was real young, Dolly Parton. My first rock concert was Stray Cats at the Indiana State Fair. It was incredible. I met Brian Setzer many years later in the 90’s. First festival type concert…Monsters of Rock in 1985 with Van Halen, Scorpions, Metallica, Dokken and Kingdom Come.

First Car: Monte Carlo. It was like a boat. I loved the car though. The next cars were Thunderbird, Cavalier, Mustang. There was a time when I even owned a Storm. Remember THOSE?!? What the heck.

First Radio Job: WCER in Huntington and I did pretty much whatever I wanted there…followed by jobs in Marion and Wabash. My first Fort Wayne radio job was WOWO when WOWO still played music and was downtown. I did weekends there. My first full-time Fort Wayne radio gig was when I was still a teenager at WDJB, B-106. I did middays there and had a great time. Then it was WMEE the first stint (through ’95), then WLDE (through 2000), went to Orlando to work for MIX 105.1 for many years and then Minneapolis to work for KS95. WMEE (stint number two through 2012) and here I am again at FUN 101.7. I did some television a few years ago and although it was enjoyable, I feel that radio gives you more freedom. Through the good and the bad, I’ve enjoyed it everywhere I’ve been.

Stevie Nicks

I’ve been a fan of Stevie Nicks since before Fleetwood Mac. I loved Buckingham Nicks, Stevie and Lindsay’s project pre-Fleetwood Mac. I like all of her solo albums. If you get a chance to see Stevie in concert, you should do that. She does return to Indiana in March at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indy. You can get our whole Concert Calendar here.

What My Day Is Like

I love doing my show weekdays, 12-4, on FUN 101.7, but that’s just a part of my day here at work. I’m Programming Assistant for all three of our Fort Wayne stations: FUN 101.7, Alt 99.5 and Majic 95.1. I mainly deal with FUN and Alt. I arrive around 8am and am here until 6, 7, sometimes later, depending on the workload. What I do in that time varies between various things in programming, promotions, production and the main thing I do is the music for FUN and do a lot of day-to-day things for our alternative station, Alt 99.5…adding new music, fresh elements on the station and whatever else is needed. There’s a lot of meetings. My brain never stops, I’m always thinking of ideas for something. Most of all, I love what I do…all of it.

One Hit Wonders Weekend

It begins Friday at 3! Sly Fox, Nena, Level 42, Londonbeat and all the rest.

Quote Of The Day

Assumptions Are Dangerous Things.

Congrats, Kate Upton

Kate Upton is the 2017 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover girl.

Happy Valentine’s Day

It’s February 14th… Have a nice VDay! I’ll be hanging out with the other single people. 🙂

Happy Anniversary, YouTube

YouTube began on this day (2/14) in 2005!

Here’s my picks for some of the greatest things you can find on YouTube:

Tom Snyder interviewing Kiss with a hilarious Ace. You can sense some tension back then.

Billy Idol with Generation X in 1979.

Rare video of Madonna & Prince’s Love Song.

Arnold Schwarzenegger one-liner mashup.

Full Fleetwood Mac concert from 1975.

Bruce Springsteen and Chuck Berry doing Johnny B. Goode in 1995.

Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones on the making of Thriller.

My Favorite TV Shows At The Moment

I may make my favorites a regular thing for tv, music and movies… and it could be a mix of not only new, but some older thinsg too.

FX has a couple of great ones: Taboo and Legion.

Be sure to check them out!

FX’s Taboo

FX’s Legion

My Favorite Music At The Moment

I’ve been on a Talking Heads kick lately. When they first hit, nobody sounded like them. I call it art rock. Very different. Unique.

I’ve been a forever fan of The Replacements and now Tommy Stinson’s brought back his post-Replacements band, Bash & Pop! Their latest material is excellent.

I’m a vinyl nut and quite a few 80’s classic hit artists have been doing reissues on vinyl: Madonna, Prince, Bruce Springsteen with more on the way.

My Favorite Movies At The Moment

I just had a Die Hard marathon recently. Those flicks are still great, especially the first one.

Book Club: Peter Guralnick’s Sam Phillips, The Man Who Invented Rock n Roll…SUN Records story.

If I had a Book Club, this would be my first pick. I love this one! It’s my latest read and I’m almost done with it. It’s such a great story about Sam Phillips and the story of SUN Records, the label he started which launched Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and many others.

TV Superstar Tidbits

Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) has another tv project ahead for Amazon called Electric Dreams, based on the Phillip K. Dick novel.

Edward James Olmos is going to star in the Sons of Anarchy spinoff called Mayans along with Emilio Rivera.

Carpool Karaoke: The Series

James Corden’s hit bit, Carpool Karaoke, is about to become an actual series for Apple…soon!

Happy Birthday, Peter Gabriel

Shock The Monkey is one of my favorite Peter Gabriel songs.

I love the album, So, and all of those tunes are great and Sledgehammer is one of the best videos ever.

Wayne’s World

It’s the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Wayne’s World today and tomorrow  (2/7 and 2/8) and there are some showings in Fort Wayne!

Get the showings listing here.

Black History Month

February is Black History Month and I’ve always liked any kind of r&b, soul, funk…you name it. Rock & Roll itself was born from the early days of r&b. Treat yourself to some great talent from over the years. Among my favorites: Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, any of the Motown material, Philly soul, Parliament Funkadelic, the rock & roll of Chuck Berry, the showmanship of Little Richard, the piano playing of Fats Domino, Sly & The Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire and there’s so much excellent talent NOW like Andra Day and Leon Bridges (who’s got a total Sam Cooke vibe).

Happy Birthday (2/6), Axl Rose of GNR

Stranger Things

I really liked season one. Netflix’s Stranger Things returns on Halloween!

IPFW Homecoming

IPFW‘s Homecoming celebration begins today!

Super Bowl

Although I was hoping for a Falcons victory and I’m NOT a Patriots fan at all, you’ve gotta give it to the Pats. That was one heck of a comeback!

Lady Gaga was incredible! She’ll be in Indy on November 5th at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The commercials were pretty weak, although a couple of decent ones. The trailers were fun! Looking forward  most to Guardians of the Galaxy 2. See some of the trailers on our FUN 101 Facebook page.

Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours

Weekends

I love them and want them more often. Can somebody please make this happen? Thanks!  🙂

Hit Makers

I’m looking forward to this book, Hit Makers from Derek Thompson. This will dig into the details as to why things become hits, whether it’s a tv show or music or a movie etc. It’s not always what we think. There’s a lot of moving parts that make things happen. We always hope things are some organic greatness, but that’s not usually the case.

I Love Fort Wayne

There’s many reasons why I love Fort Wayne and here’s a few: Great people, our award winning zoo, thriving and growing downtown, our sports teams…Komets, Tin Caps, Mad Ants, Mastodons, Derby Girls and the others, our excellent museums, fantastic restaurants, the beautiful Embassy Theatre, the Brass Rail, Skeletunes, CS3 and the Tiger Room, C2G, our incredible festivals: Three Rivers Festival, Middle Waves Music Festival, Hobnobben Film Festival and the rest, Cinema Center and I could go on and on. I really like our very talented local musicians like: Secret Mezzanine, James & The Drifters, The B-45’s, Metavari, The Meat Flowers, Jess Thrower, The Orange Opera and all the others.

BNQT

I’m such a fan of many things…movies and especially music…all genres. I’m always seeking things that I’ll enjoy.

So here comes a Supergroup called BNQT, which features members of Band of Horses, Midlake, Travis, Franz Ferdinand and Grandaddy!

This is such a catchy tune, Restart.

Fort Wayne FYI

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry’s State of the City address is February 15th.

Fort Wayne Derby Girls home opener is February 11th.

Let’s talk The Kinks

I’m a major British Invasion fan and dig The Beatles and the Stones, but my favorite of the bunch is The Kinks! I really enjoy those Kinks songs, especially from the 60’s. Just your gritty, raw, garage rock. That’s the way rock & roll should be…always. I’m happy that Ray Davies has a fresh project with the band, The Jayhawks called Americana.

Bit and Chunks

Gabriel Iglesias with his own ABC tv sitcom in the works. The Fluffy Guy will be in Fort Wayne at the Embassy on March 5th.

Paris Jackson talks about Michael Jackson and believes he was murdered!

Do What You Love

Do What You Love is a statement I’ve made many times to my kids. If you find something that you enjoy and can make money doing it, then it never really feels like work. That’s how I’ve always felt about radio. Although, like anything, there’s up’s and down’s, it’s something that I have a passion for and love. I feel so lucky and grateful for the various opportunities I’ve had over time. I just hope it all comes through just how much I enjoy playing around on the radio. Find your passion and sometimes it can be one thing or many and it can change too. Never give up!

The President

I thought Donald Trump’s Presidential Inauguration went well. I liked the speech. Oh and I’m not a Republican or a Democrat. I don’t play the political game. It’s two sides of the same coin, typically. Remember, an eagle has TWO wings and so does politics. We may not like it, but that’s the way it is. I’m more of a issue oriented person, not party. America all the way and leave me alone. That’s pretty much my stance. The President’s first weekly address is this weekend and he’ll have a major interview just prior to the Super Bowl on February 5th.

Super Bowl

Super Bowl is set. Falcons and the Patriots. I’m so over the Patriots! So, go Falcons!! Maybe next year the Colts will get there again. Super Bowl is February 5th and Lady Gaga is the halftime show. I’ll have my beer ready for the game. The other bowl game nobody really cares about is the Pro Bowl, which is this weekend.

LIFE 101

I’ve made appointments for the doctor, the dentist and car maintenance all this week. It’s January and I always think it’s a nice time to do the regular checkups on everything. I do it all a few times a year. So far, everything is smooth. I’m just glad to get it all done for a while.   🙂
