A Few Of My Firsts
I’ll give you my age, which will put some of these in perspective better. I’m 45! 🙂
First Music: The first music I remember hearing was Wings and then I went back and listened to all of The Beatles material. I grew to love a lot of music that was before my time. I have an appreciation for it all and many genres. I’ll go in depth on my thoughts on it all in a post some time. I went back and listened to The Doors, The Rolling Stones and so much more. I was in elementary school when I began buying music. The first music I bought…Single: Joan Jett/I Love Rock & Roll. Albums: Survivor’s Eye Of The Tiger, Human League’s Dare, Quiet Riot’s Metal Health and Def Leppard’s Pyromania. By the time I got to high school…hard rock, metal, hair bands were the thing in the late 80’s and although I liked much of it, I also liked The Pixies and Sonic Youth. The Replacements are still one of my favorite bands ever!
First Movies: Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw in theatres. What a first one to see! The first movies I ever bought…all of the Star Wars flicks, The Godfather trilogy and The Dark Crystal.
First Concert: The first official concert I ever went to was with my parents with I was real young, Dolly Parton. My first rock concert was Stray Cats at the Indiana State Fair. It was incredible. I met Brian Setzer many years later in the 90’s. First festival type concert…Monsters of Rock in 1985 with Van Halen, Scorpions, Metallica, Dokken and Kingdom Come.
First Car: Monte Carlo. It was like a boat. I loved the car though. The next cars were Thunderbird, Cavalier, Mustang. There was a time when I even owned a Storm. Remember THOSE?!? What the heck.
First Radio Job: WCER in Huntington and I did pretty much whatever I wanted there…followed by jobs in Marion and Wabash. My first Fort Wayne radio job was WOWO when WOWO still played music and was downtown. I did weekends there. My first full-time Fort Wayne radio gig was when I was still a teenager at WDJB, B-106. I did middays there and had a great time. Then it was WMEE the first stint (through ’95), then WLDE (through 2000), went to Orlando to work for MIX 105.1 for many years and then Minneapolis to work for KS95. WMEE (stint number two through 2012) and here I am again at FUN 101.7. I did some television a few years ago and although it was enjoyable, I feel that radio gives you more freedom. Through the good and the bad, I’ve enjoyed it everywhere I’ve been.
I’ve been a fan of Stevie Nicks since before Fleetwood Mac. I loved Buckingham Nicks, Stevie and Lindsay’s project pre-Fleetwood Mac. I like all of her solo albums. If you get a chance to see Stevie in concert, you should do that. She does return to Indiana in March at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indy. You can get our whole Concert Calendar here.

What My Day Is Like
I love doing my show weekdays, 12-4, on FUN 101.7, but that’s just a part of my day here at work. I’m Programming Assistant for all three of our Fort Wayne stations: FUN 101.7, Alt 99.5 and Majic 95.1. I mainly deal with FUN and Alt. I arrive around 8am and am here until 6, 7, sometimes later, depending on the workload. What I do in that time varies between various things in programming, promotions, production and the main thing I do is the music for FUN and do a lot of day-to-day things for our alternative station, Alt 99.5…adding new music, fresh elements on the station and whatever else is needed. There’s a lot of meetings. My brain never stops, I’m always thinking of ideas for something. Most of all, I love what I do…all of it.
One Hit Wonders Weekend
It begins Friday at 3! Sly Fox, Nena, Level 42, Londonbeat and all the rest.
Quote Of The Day
Assumptions Are Dangerous Things.
Congrats, Kate Upton
Happy Valentine’s Day
It’s February 14th… Have a nice VDay! I’ll be hanging out with the other single people. 🙂
Happy Anniversary, YouTube
YouTube began on this day (2/14) in 2005!
Here’s my picks for some of the greatest things you can find on YouTube:
Tom Snyder interviewing Kiss with a hilarious Ace. You can sense some tension back then.
Full Fleetwood Mac concert from 1975.
My Favorite TV Shows At The Moment
I may make my favorites a regular thing for tv, music and movies… and it could be a mix of not only new, but some older thinsg too.
FX has a couple of great ones: Taboo and Legion.
Be sure to check them out!
My Favorite Music At The Moment
I’ve been on a Talking Heads kick lately. When they first hit, nobody sounded like them. I call it art rock. Very different. Unique.
I’ve been a forever fan of The Replacements and now Tommy Stinson’s brought back his post-Replacements band, Bash & Pop! Their latest material is excellent.
My Favorite Movies At The Moment
I just had a Die Hard marathon recently. Those flicks are still great, especially the first one.
Book Club: Peter Guralnick’s Sam Phillips, The Man Who Invented Rock n Roll…SUN Records story.
If I had a Book Club, this would be my first pick. I love this one! It’s my latest read and I’m almost done with it. It’s such a great story about Sam Phillips and the story of SUN Records, the label he started which launched Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and many others.
TV Superstar Tidbits
Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) has another tv project ahead for Amazon called Electric Dreams, based on the Phillip K. Dick novel.
Edward James Olmos is going to star in the Sons of Anarchy spinoff called Mayans along with Emilio Rivera.
Carpool Karaoke: The Series
James Corden’s hit bit, Carpool Karaoke, is about to become an actual series for Apple…soon!
Happy Birthday, Peter Gabriel
Shock The Monkey is one of my favorite Peter Gabriel songs.
I love the album, So, and all of those tunes are great and Sledgehammer is one of the best videos ever.
Here’s your Grammy Award recap.

Black History Month
February is Black History Month and I’ve always liked any kind of r&b, soul, funk…you name it. Rock & Roll itself was born from the early days of r&b. Treat yourself to some great talent from over the years. Among my favorites: Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, any of the Motown material, Philly soul, Parliament Funkadelic, the rock & roll of Chuck Berry, the showmanship of Little Richard, the piano playing of Fats Domino, Sly & The Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire and there’s so much excellent talent NOW like Andra Day and Leon Bridges (who’s got a total Sam Cooke vibe).
Happy Birthday (2/6), Axl Rose of GNR
I really liked season one. Netflix’s Stranger Things returns on Halloween!
IPFW‘s Homecoming celebration begins today!
Although I was hoping for a Falcons victory and I’m NOT a Patriots fan at all, you’ve gotta give it to the Pats. That was one heck of a comeback!
Lady Gaga was incredible! She’ll be in Indy on November 5th at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
The commercials were pretty weak, although a couple of decent ones. The trailers were fun! Looking forward most to Guardians of the Galaxy 2. See some of the trailers on our FUN 101 Facebook page.
Stranger Things returns to Netflix on Halloween!

Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours
Today (2/4/17) marks the 40th Anniversary of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours. It’s still one of the greatest albums ever and I listen to it often.
Here’s an interesting piece on the iconic album.
I love them and want them more often. Can somebody please make this happen? Thanks! 🙂
I’m looking forward to this book, Hit Makers from Derek Thompson. This will dig into the details as to why things become hits, whether it’s a tv show or music or a movie etc. It’s not always what we think. There’s a lot of moving parts that make things happen. We always hope things are some organic greatness, but that’s not usually the case.
I Love Fort Wayne
There’s many reasons why I love Fort Wayne and here’s a few: Great people, our award winning zoo, thriving and growing downtown, our sports teams…Komets, Tin Caps, Mad Ants, Mastodons, Derby Girls and the others, our excellent museums, fantastic restaurants, the beautiful Embassy Theatre, the Brass Rail, Skeletunes, CS3 and the Tiger Room, C2G, our incredible festivals: Three Rivers Festival, Middle Waves Music Festival, Hobnobben Film Festival and the rest, Cinema Center and I could go on and on. I really like our very talented local musicians like: Secret Mezzanine, James & The Drifters, The B-45’s, Metavari, The Meat Flowers, Jess Thrower, The Orange Opera and all the others.
I’m such a fan of many things…movies and especially music…all genres. I’m always seeking things that I’ll enjoy.
So here comes a Supergroup called BNQT, which features members of Band of Horses, Midlake, Travis, Franz Ferdinand and Grandaddy!
This is such a catchy tune, Restart.

Fort Wayne Derby Girls home opener is February 11th.
Let’s talk The Kinks
I’m a major British Invasion fan and dig The Beatles and the Stones, but my favorite of the bunch is The Kinks! I really enjoy those Kinks songs, especially from the 60’s. Just your gritty, raw, garage rock. That’s the way rock & roll should be…always. I’m happy that Ray Davies has a fresh project with the band, The Jayhawks called Americana.

Do What You Love
Do What You Love is a statement I’ve made many times to my kids. If you find something that you enjoy and can make money doing it, then it never really feels like work. That’s how I’ve always felt about radio. Although, like anything, there’s up’s and down’s, it’s something that I have a passion for and love. I feel so lucky and grateful for the various opportunities I’ve had over time. I just hope it all comes through just how much I enjoy playing around on the radio. Find your passion and sometimes it can be one thing or many and it can change too. Never give up!
I thought Donald Trump’s Presidential Inauguration went well. I liked the speech. Oh and I’m not a Republican or a Democrat. I don’t play the political game. It’s two sides of the same coin, typically. Remember, an eagle has TWO wings and so does politics. We may not like it, but that’s the way it is. I’m more of a issue oriented person, not party. America all the way and leave me alone. That’s pretty much my stance. The President’s first weekly address is this weekend and he’ll have a major interview just prior to the Super Bowl on February 5th.
Super Bowl is set. Falcons and the Patriots. I’m so over the Patriots! So, go Falcons!! Maybe next year the Colts will get there again. Super Bowl is February 5th and Lady Gaga is the halftime show. I’ll have my beer ready for the game. The other bowl game nobody really cares about is the Pro Bowl, which is this weekend.
I’ve made appointments for the doctor, the dentist and car maintenance all this week. It’s January and I always think it’s a nice time to do the regular checkups on everything. I do it all a few times a year. So far, everything is smooth. I’m just glad to get it all done for a while. 🙂
